AWA International Final 2011 - Day 1
PLEASE NOTE: Orders from this event cannot be processed until Tuesday 11 October 2011.
The Final of the Anglian Water Airflo International was held at Rutland Water on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 October 2011.
One hundred and thirty eight anglers representing twenty three teams form all over Europe contested this years popular Anglian Water Airflo competition. The unseasonal ‘Indian Summer’ had taken its toll on the Rutland during the practice days turning the usually pristine water a nasty shade of brown. However, the breeze had picked up, the ambient air temperature had dropped to a more comfortable 19 degrees and the water had returned to a more acceptable colour by the start of the first days fishing. It’s great to see such an eclectic mix of teams in this years Final with no less than two from the Orkneys and one from Shetland Isles. Blagdon FF Bristol Water’s captain John Braithwaite experienced a birthday to remember. John’s wife of 3 years rang to wish him happy returns of the day and after some general chit chat John said he had to go because the start of the match was due. His wife asked if there was anything else? John was married on his birthday so he didn’t have any excuse to forget his anniversary..did he? However, the best laid plans and all that, and, the important date had completely slipped his mind. A frantic phone call to a local florist followed and the genial West country angler was off the hook...so to speak, and the tale was graphical relaid to all the competitors by Fisheries Manager Jon Marshall at the briefing before the match. Because the event is run over two days it is not possible to file a full report on today’s fishing other than to say that twelve boats headed for the reservoirs North Arm, six to the South Arm and the rest motored to the dam frontage. With some superb bags on a difficult day Seighford Sharks led by Phil Dixon lead on day one by an impressive 8lbs from second place England Youth North captained by Carl Malpass and third place Welsh Hawks led by Russell Owen. However, tomorrow is a different day and commanding leads have been known to disappear and it is forecast to be decidedly breezy. Phil dispatched three of the team’s boats to the South Arm fishing New Zealand Point down to the Sailing Club. Mick McLintic made good use of his late team inclusion to take seven fish on Crunchers along the weed beds including one of the biggest fish to be taken from the reservoir this season, a cracking 7lb 8oz brownie. But it was a consistent team performance that clinched the first day winning margin for the Sharks. However, performance of the day must go the the England Youth North team who also put in some fantastic fishing to upstage many of their senior rivals on their first outing in a major domestic Final.
