AWA International Final 2011 - Day 2
PLEASE NOTE: Orders from this event cannot be processed until Tuesday 11 October 2011.
Day two started with a couple of dramas for two of the teams including Seighford Sharks captain Phil Dixon. Phil was delivering some of the fish the team caught to the kitchen of the hotel they are staying at. It was dark and he didn’t see the steep steps leading down until it was too late. Phil ended up un-ceremoniously in some bushes surrounded by the fish. The damage was bad but thankfully not life-threatening but the Seighford captain was clearly in some severe discomfort as he took his place in the boat before today’s start. Team Vision’s Steve Buck was also in the wars suffering some bruising following a car crash in Leicester this morning where both cars involved were right off’s and things were to get even worse for Steve as the day progressed. The weather, although slightly windier, is not too bad for the 9am start. However, it is forecast to increase after lunch and the fishery staff are geared up to move the boats back from the dam to the draw-off tower if necessary. 10 boats headed for the South Arm at the start with another 11 or so motoring up the North Arm the rest were well spread out right across the Dam frontage. Canny old local expert Dave Doherty was the only boat drifting in the calm water alongside Armley Wood and both he and his boat partner were quickly into good fish. Not a lot of action along the Dam wall and the ride was getting pretty bumpy for the competitors as well as the cameras.
As long as your name is Dixon!
Phil Dixon, Aled Dixon and Gareth Dixon all figured as individual prize winners at the gala dinner held at the splendid Greetham Valley Golf & Country Club after a difficult day two of the Anglian Water Airflo International Final. As predicted the wind did pick up during the afternoon and several boats experienced some ‘difficulties’ near the Dam Wall, one having to resort to abandoning ship onto the stones with their kit when the kill cord to the engine came adrift. And the inclement weather took its toll on the competitors equipment as well with at least two rods suffering terminal damage including the unlucky Team Vision’s Steve Buck whose prized G.Loomis bit the dust when the boats anchor decided to attack it. It was the last straw for Steve in a day he would rather forget. The Welsh Hawks, led by Russell Owen, took the title with a brilliant display of consistent team fishing and although they brought three fish less than second place Seighford Sharks to the scales over the two days, they were a comfortable five pounds in weight ahead at the end of the day. Which is more than could be said for the difference between Seighford and third placed Nymph-a-Maniacs which was a squeaky fraction of an ounce. Mention must go to fifth place England Youth North who shocked many of the fancied teams with what must be one of the best performances from an under sixteen team ever and you wouldn’t get long odds on them returning next year and repeating their 2011 success. And, a mention for Flextec Emerald Islanders and their captain Mark Duncan who wrested the Overseas Trophy from G.Loomis Team Belgium who had won the trophy for the last seven years. Mark also capped a successful event for the Irish team by winning the Best Rainbow on Day 1 with a cracking fish taken from the bottom of Lax Hill almost with his first cast of the day.
